Damp squib

tornadoSo sad that the weather means the fireworks at the Infants aren’t going ahead tonight but the north wind doth blow and all that. Or is it south? Or west? Whatever it is, it’s WINDY!

This is one of BISA’s biggest fund raisers and I hope everyone can still go along to the event once it gets rescheduled. We did chat at one point about BISA and the FBA doing some mutual advertising for each other’s events. Once your kiddies all leave the Infants, you may not get to hear about the fun stuff they have going on up the hill so I will put out a reminder to the Juniors when Lucy at the infants has a new date. If you did not get a chance to put yourself forward to help tonight with marshalling or boiling hotdogs and would like to give BISA a hand on the new date when we know what it is, send us an email and I’ll put you in touch with the organisers at the Infants.

It’s a lottery!

According to the Brighton and Hove City Council, our innocent sounding raffle is actually a lottery. You need a license to run one of these. Although it sounds scary official, it is really just a plain old fashioned raffle. In the next day or so, we will be sending out our (fully licensed) raffle tickets for you to buy/sell.

There are truly some wonderful prizes this year. The biggest and top prize comes from the supremely generous Baker Street Bikes. Guess what it is!

Make sure that money and ticket stubbs are back with us via the black post box on the left  hand side of the outer lobby bit of the entrance by end of school pick up on Friday 28th November. Any later than that and we may miss them in the hurly burly of setting up the fair.

So if it’s a lottery, to coin a phrase – it could be you. But only if you enter the raffle!

BFB bears fruit

Money raised through the Balfour Farmers’ Bag scheme is ring-fenced to be spent on school projects to do with cooking and gardening. Now it has been up and running for a couple of terms, there is money in the bank and it’s time to do some shopping.

The plan is that we buy some more fruit trees for the school playground – anyone who walks past or through in the spring knows already about the amazing cherry trees. However, there are a couple of places where poorly trees have been removed in the past and our amazing garden expert parents are currently making plans as to which trees to get, where to put them and so forth.

What do you reckon? Apple? Fig? Pears? Let us know your ideas.

With the anticipated building work at the school, we can’t plant in some areas yet, but within a few years, we might have ourselves an orchard!

We will even give you a table

The very beating heart of any fair are the stalls and to keep them raising thumping loads of money for the school, we need people to staff them.

Although tables are not strictly necessary, we like to use them

So we are currently on the prowl for people to volunteer an hour on the day of the Advent fair (2 – 5 Saturday November 29) to stand behind a table, smile and run various things like good old Hoopla, Guess the Weight of the cake and Whack the Rat.

Keep an eye on the notice board and check back here for info, but my cunning plan is that each class will run a stall and that way I can put my feet up and drink all the Pimms on the day.

Ah if only. Your help will mean that I get to serve some burgers and end the day smelling really bad.

Please get in touch if you haven’t already and let us know if you can help.

And if a friend approaches you in the playground and asks you to be on a stall (I’ve been delegating), just say YES. It couldn’t be simpler!

Guy Parker-Rees is the Advent Fair’s official artist

World famous, nay, in fact, universally recognised children’s book illustrator and Balfour dad has provided us with wonderful pictures for our publicity for the advent fair.

We are overwhelmed with thanks for the man who made giraffes dance and dinosaurs rumpus and who fills our bedtimes with joy. When reading to our children of course.

Check out his website and you will recognise his work at a glance. You can make the pics move around on the home page if you wiggle your mouse over them. Very entertaining.

Keep your eyes peeled for his beautiful, energetic and cheeky pics on the posters you will at some point be asked to put in your windows. Adding these to your facade will be nothing less than home improvement.

Irrational elf service

With the Christmas Fair now the Advent fair, our quandry is: what to do about Santa?

Clearly, he cant work during November when instead he will be sitting at home with his feet up waiting for the whole busy month of December to begin.

Fearing disappointment and not wanting to see the glum faces of the Balfour Juniors unable to hear his jolly cry of ho! ho! ho! and missing out on a visit to him in his grotto, we have decided to employ some elves instead. They too are at a lose end since their short-term temporary contract in Santa’s toy factory only kicks off on December 1.  It’s either the Advent fair or making shoes, they said.

So, in their own magical elfin home which will be installed for the day in Balfour Juniors on November 29, children can write their letters to Santa, post these in the special post box and leave with a small gift in anticipation of what will be left around their Christmas trees (which will also to be on sale at the Advent fair) on Christmas morning.

Fancy yourself as an Elf? Your dream can come true in 27 days when Elf Yourself once more charms bored office staff with their clever ways. And if that is not enough, why not get in touch with us. I’m sure we might have an opening for you…

Don’t dis the balaclavas!

Another message about how much we need YOU on Tuesday 14th October at 7.00 in the Dining Hall. If only to smile at us sweetly and not even offer any help. Just some moral support would make the FBA committee very happy. Would just like to thank the committee members for posing for the images that have no doubt inspired you to attend next week via the letter we sent out. I hear there is still wine maybe left over from the Quiz. Strange but true. This will  be served in small plastic cups on said date.

Rob Bowden

Rob Bowden (above) was elected as chair while distracted. He is delighted nonetheless to take on this honorous/onerous role.

Charlotte and Kendra

Charlotte Clowe and Kendra Stonehouse, (above) while not officially on the committee are always there to make things go in a nice way with good ideas and smily faces if the former don’t quite go the way of loveliness.

NIna is already counting her floats. Essential preparation considering the condition of the bar staff on the day. Emphasis on staff I hope come the big day. Everything in 50ps and nice round £1s. What can possibly go wrong? (right)

Robert Middleton-Paine agreed recently, after having been bought a drink by Rob Bowden, that as a man, he was needed on the FBA committee to make Rob feel less lonely. So a job was invented. Robert MP (Below) is now the social secretary.

And there's the me, the writer of these missives. Clad in yarn and looking a bit sinister, I look forward to seeing you, through the small eye-slot in my balaclava on the 17th October at 7.00 in the dining hall.

And there's me, my hands clad in yarn while typing this but very much looking forward to seeing you, through the small eye-holes in my balaclava on Tuesday 17th October 2008 at 7.00 in the dining hall.
